Oh won't you link to me

Is it big headed to place a "link to us" section on your website? Maybe, but you have one of the best websites out there right? Ok, seriously, is it a good idea to add a link to us section? Maybe, maybe not. I tend not to put it on because I don't think people will use it and it seems big headed. But maybe people will, especially if it's just a little button they can put on.

Fan site naming ideas

Stuck for what to name your fan site? There's loads of generic combinations that you can use. A lot of people choose to go with something like david-smith.org or something along similar lines but I prefer to avoid hyphens at all costs and I like my site to have some kind of name too. So here's a few naming conventions you can use, I'm using Zack Braff (JD in Scrubs :p) to illustrate them but obviously you will want to fill in your own name whether it be a celeb, TV show, etc.

HTML elements that just aren't cool

Ok so you want to make your new website as shiny as possible and add as many things to it as possible. Stop. Some things may look great to you but there are a lot of things you can add to a website which are simply not cool and the unfortunate fact is that us fan site webmasters are some of the worst offenders.

Page ideas and possible content

I was originally toying with the idea of calling this "the definitive list of possible pages" but I figured as this was basically the first draft that was a little over-ambitious. What I have tried to do in this article is put together a list of all the possible pages and content you may want to include if your building or looking to expand your fan site.

No doubt you will want your fan site to be as complete as possible as complete as possible and with the multimedia craze these days videos are always a welcome addition even if they do eat up a lot of bandwidth.

The beginning of the end for Google

Over the past few years we on the internet have experianced something magical. Google became the widely accepted king of search, there was nothing it couldn't do and nothing it couldn't find. Now though, it looks like that is all coming to an end.

Which forum script to use

Forums are good. I'm not going to turn this article into a propaganda article about why forums are cool because you've probably had that rammed down your throat already. Instead I almost believe the opposite. Forums only work if you have an active community ready to post and get it started. Otherwise it's a dead waste.

Where to get linked

Your awesome new site is operational? No, ok well come back when it is ;). For those who have got their site online it's time to get some other sites linking it to bring in some visitors. Obviously search engines are good but manual links are better.

Connecting to MySQL

So you have your shiny new MySQL database your web host has given you and you are already to begin your PHP scripting. If not then you can get an account with all this from www.tripod.lycos.co.uk. Or you could when I wrote this anyway.

Hide your email from spam bots

Spammers are always trying to get new email address's to send their worthless mail to. And so there are now many Spam bots crawling the internet in search of email addresses. And if you have your email address listed on your site you could be picked up.
